API free credits: meaning and free-plan examples

Answer in brief

API free credits are an introductory balance for making requests through a provider's developer interface. They aren't the same as a free chat account: DeepSeek lists paid API usage separately from its consumer chat app. Eligibility, expiry and supported models depend on the provider.

API free credits: what changes your decision

A browser assistant and an API can have different billing accounts. Don't assume a free app includes developer access, or that a paid chat subscription pays for API requests. Read the API pricing page and check whether credits expire before wiring a service into an app.

Check the balance, expiry date, eligible models and what happens after it reaches zero. Never rely on an introductory balance for ongoing costs.

Examples in actual free plans

  • Is DeepSeek free? Plan and limits

Free consumer chat, per DeepSeek's app announcement. No published usage numbers; the app can slow down at busy times.

  • Is ChatGPT free? Plan and limits

Everyday text chat, described by OpenAI as unlimited within abuse safeguards. Tools such as image creation and file analysis have their own usage limits that reset over time.
