What "free AI" really means

Four kinds of free hide behind the same word. Knowing which one you're looking at saves a lot of frustration.
1. Fully free
No paid consumer plan exists. DeepSeek's chat app is the main example. Limits still exist in practice (busy servers), but nothing is held back for subscribers.
2. Freemium with refilling limits
The most common model. You get an allowance that resets daily, weekly or monthly: Ideogram's 30 weekly credits, ElevenLabs' 10,000 monthly credits.
3. One-time credits
A starter pool that never refills, like Runway's 125 credits or Gamma's 400 sign-up credits. Good for a real test, not for ongoing use.
4. Open weights
Some companies, including DeepSeek, publish model weights you can run on your own computer. The weights can be downloaded, but hardware, running costs, software settings and the model license still matter.
The licence matters as much as the price
Free output often can't be used commercially. ElevenLabs, Suno, Luma and Photoroom restrict commercial use on free plans; Playground and Runway allow it. Check before you build a business on a free tier.
