self-hosted AI: meaning and free-plan examples
Answer in brief
Self-hosted AI runs on infrastructure you control rather than solely through a provider's hosted app. DeepSeek publishes weights that can support this approach. The model download can be free while hardware, electricity, setup and maintenance still cost money; the release's license remains relevant.

Local execution can keep inference on your machine, but downloaded software, telemetry settings and connected services still need review. Hardware requirements depend on the model size and runtime. A downloadable model isn't automatically practical on an ordinary laptop.
Start with the model's requirements and a supported runtime. Check the software's network behavior before calling the setup private, and budget for ongoing operation.
